Position Overview

The Caretaker II plays a pivotal role in overseeing and managing day-to-day custodial activities to ensure the school environment remains clean, safe, and well-maintained. This role involves supervision during the shift, ensuring grounds, buildings, and equipment are properly cared for.

Key Responsibilities and Competencies

  • Manage and supervise custodial tasks effectively to maintain cleanliness standards.
  • Maintain and operate equipment such as lawn tractors, hand tools, floor machines, and auto scrubbers.
  • Implement safety standards in line with Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, Fire Safety procedures, and security protocols.
  • Diligently maintain building and grounds in safe and proper working condition.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills to plan and coordinate resources and time.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills, adapting messages for clear understanding.
  • Innovate and improve custodial processes to enhance the learning community environment.
  • Develop harmonious professional relationships showing respect and sensitivity.
  • Provide leadership by motivating and coordinating efforts to achieve common goals.
  • Uphold professional integrity by consistently demonstrating ethical conduct.
  • Understand and contribute to the broader vision and mission of the ALCDSB, seeing work as part of a larger system.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Between 9 months to 1 year of practical caretaking experience.
  • Familiarity with various custodial equipment including lawn tractors, hand tools, floor machines, and auto scrubbers.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety regulations such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, and Fire Safety procedures.
  • Working understanding of HVAC equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Physical capability to perform manual and maintenance duties associated with the role.
  • Strong interpersonal and English language skills (reading and writing).
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training as necessary.
  • Experience with alternative communication methods and basic computer abilities is advantageous.

Additional Information and Terms

  • This opportunity is available to all CUPE employees, with preference according to the Collective Agreement for CUPE local 1479, prioritizing permanent internal candidates, then temporary employees, before external applicants.
  • The position operates full-time, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week.
  • Hourly wage ranges between $25.02 to $28.74.
  • The role is based at St. Genevieve Catholic School in Kingston, Ontario.
  • Requirement to submit a Police Record Check including vulnerable sector screening within six months prior to employment.
