Role Overview
The Calibration Technician I position is an entry-level role suited for candidates with education or at least one year of experience in electronics or calibration. Technicians at this level are typically proficient in calibrating basic process instruments within up to three disciplines such as Electrical, Dimensional, or Pressure, progressing according to Transcat’s skill matrix.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with lab technicians to gain foundational knowledge in calibration fundamentals covering measurement, temperature, electronics, etc.
- Choose and apply suitable measurement techniques
- Maintain calibration standards accurately
- Develop working competence in three or more disciplines (e.g., dimensional, electrical, torque, temperature, pressure)
- Perform calibrations reliably in the laboratory or under supervision at client sites
- Execute duties in accordance with company safety standards
- Other assignments as necessary
- Travel is expected to comprise 25-50% of the work schedule
Goals for the Role
- Acquire core calibration skills and methods
- Build the ability to conduct calibrations independently
- Prepare for advancement to Calibration Technician II by achieving proficiency in at least four disciplines and expertise in one
- Adhere to Transcat’s Quality Policy standards
Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of assigned training via on-the-job, online, LMS, and classroom instruction
- Strong interpersonal and customer service capabilities
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Self-driven with eagerness to learn calibration and related processes
- Receptive to feedback and adept in communication with supervisors
- Problem-solving skills and ability to work solo or in teams
- Valid driver's license with minimum 3 years driving experience
Education and Experience
- Required: Associate degree from college or technical school, or at least one year of relevant experience/training, or equivalent combination
- Preferred: Background in electronics or machining, familiarity with math concepts such as algebra, geometry, statistics
- Experience with basic hand tools
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook
- Organizational and time management skills
- Exposure to PMEL, PME, TMDE, Metrology, Calibration, ASQ CCT, METCAL, GPETE, Electronics, GCAMS, or Avionics is advantageous
Physical Demands
To perform this job, employees are expected to read, write, talk, hear, and frequently use hands and fingers for tool handling. Occasional standing, walking, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling is needed. Lifting up to 75 pounds may occasionally be required. Work Environment
This role involves regular exposure to electrical shock risks and frequent contact with moving mechanical parts. Occasionally, workers face wet/humid conditions, elevated locations, fumes, toxic chemicals, outdoor weather, and vibration. Noise levels are generally moderate.
