Job Overview

As a Cake Decorator at Whole Foods Market, you will take charge of creating and embellishing cakes, tarts, pastries, and special custom bakery products. Your artistic abilities will be key to finishing specialty bakery items with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring superior quality and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

• Assemble, fill, and artistically decorate cakes, tarts, selected pastries, and special order bakery goods.
• Construct and ice cakes following set procedures to meet demands and accurately complete production and spoilage documentation, adjusting production forecasts accordingly.
• Manage production priorities and suggest modifications as required.
• Arrange and display products attractively in the sales case, monitor quality and freshness, and ensure correct product rotation.
• Mentor and support Bakery Decorator Apprentices and other team members.
• Create custom cake designs based on customer requests.
• Deliver excellent customer service promptly, incorporating suggestive selling, and handle calls courteously.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety in the work and shopping environment, including equipment upkeep adhering to company standards.
• Complete opening, mid-shift, and closing responsibilities with precise signage and pricing.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Expertise

• Proficient in efficient cake and pastry decorating techniques, including intermediate piping and creating decorative elements like flowers and borders.
• Knowledge of color theory related to blending buttercream shades and complementary color schemes.
• Competent in using various icings such as Swiss and American Buttercream, Ganache, Cream Cheese Icing, Whipped Cream, Chantilly, German Chocolate, Fudge, and Meringue varieties.
• Capability to follow instructions, recipes, and procedures efficiently; strong organizational and time management skills.
• Advanced skills in safe knife handling and the use of bakery tools and equipment.
• Basic arithmetic skills for recipe adjustments and conversions.
• Effective communication and a team-oriented attitude.
• Ability to convey information clearly and respectfully to colleagues, customers, and suppliers.
• Commitment to customer service excellence in all interactions.
• Strong work ethic and ability to efficiently operate in a fast-paced setting.

Experience and Training

• At least 6 to 12 months experience in retail or restaurant environments.
• Completion of Bakery Decorator Apprentice training or equivalent.
• Prior experience working in a professional bakery or grocery retail setting preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Standing or walking between 6 to 8 hours during an 8-hour work shift.
• Manual dexterity involving grasping, precise manipulation, pushing, and pulling.
• Physical movements including bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
• Exposure to FDA-approved cleaning agents and varying temperature zones: freezing (<32°F), refrigerated (32-40°F), and hot (>90°F).
• Work environment includes wet and dry conditions.
• Flexible scheduling including nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
• Use of various tools and machines, such as knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks, and possibly ladders.

The wage band for this position ranges from $21.00 to $30.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
