About the Role

Our client, based in Birmingham and a renowned leader in their industry for over 50 years, is expanding their team by hiring an experienced Automated Paint Engineer. This role focuses on supporting, maintaining, and enhancing their automated paint operation. A critical element of the position is hands-on expertise with ABB IRB 5510 paint robots combined with strong capabilities in paint mixing, preparation, and process control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and provide support for ABB IRB 5510 automated paint robots.
  • Optimize and adjust robot programming to enhance paint coverage, improve quality, and reduce cycle times.
  • Accurately mix and prepare paints adhering strictly to specified ratios and formulations.
  • Measure and modify paint viscosity when necessary.
  • Prepare paints, thinners, hardeners, and other related materials following technical guidelines.
  • Ensure correct paint batches, colors, and materials are utilized in production runs.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to paint mixing, application, and robotic processes.
  • Identify and address paint quality concerns such as coverage problems, color mismatches, film thickness, runs, and consistency issues.
  • Monitor and fine-tune paint application variables to maintain stability in the process.
  • Assist with color transitions, paint line changeovers, and cleaning or flushing operations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and basic inspections on robotic systems.
  • Support product launches and develop paint programs for new components.
  • Modify robot paths, speeds, spray settings, and other application parameters as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Maintenance, Production, and Quality departments to solve recurring problems and participate in continuous improvement activities aimed at reducing paint waste, downtime, and defects, all while meeting health and safety standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date technical records, robot programs, and paint process configurations.

Experience and Skills Required

  • Minimum three years of direct experience working with ABB IRB 5510 paint robot systems in an industrial automated paint environment.
  • Proven expertise in mixing and preparing paints accurately according to technical specifications.
  • Strong capability in fault diagnosis for automated paint and robotic equipment.
  • In-depth understanding of robotic paint application and spraying techniques.
  • Ability to perform robot program and process adjustments efficiently in fast-paced settings.
  • Experience with ABB TR technology is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience as an Automated Paint Engineer within a fast-moving industrial environment is advantageous.

Additional Information

This position is onsite in Birmingham, West Midlands. The client offers a salary up to approximately £48,000 per annum depending on experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package. The role requires close teamwork across multiple departments and adherence to health and safety protocols throughout all operations and improvements.
