About the Role
The University of Waikato is seeking a dynamic leader to spearhead teaching excellence and learning innovation at its Hamilton Campus. As Associate Director of Teaching Design and Innovation, you will report to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor Academic Excellence and helm the Teaching Design and Innovation Studio. Your leadership will guide university-wide efforts in curriculum design, assessment enhancement, learning innovation, and development of academic capabilities. Collaborating with academic and professional leaders, your role is pivotal in promoting inclusive, evidence-based teaching practices that elevate the student experience and align with institutional priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership within the Teaching Design and Innovation Studio.
- Lead a specialized team focused on curriculum innovation and academic development.
- Guide major university initiatives and advise senior leadership on teaching strategies.
- Ensure the continuous enhancement of the university's reputation for teaching innovation and excellence.
- Shape the evolving scope of the role and contribute to the academic portfolio's future direction.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader passionate about advancing teaching quality and driving meaningful change in higher education. You possess strong credibility, sound judgment, and excellent stakeholder relationship-building skills. Proven experience in leading complex academic initiatives and influencing senior leaders using evidence-based decision making is essential. A doctoral degree or equivalent professional experience is required, alongside a dedication to inclusive practices, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and enhancing student outcomes.
About the Teaching Design and Innovation Studio
Operating within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) portfolio, this studio delivers leadership and services university-wide to promote effective learning design, pedagogical innovation, and capability development. It collaborates with academic and support staff to cultivate high-quality, student-centered teaching and assessment grounded in best practices, curriculum coherence, digital maturity, academic integrity, and recognition of teaching excellence.

- Location: Hillcrest Campus, Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand.
- Employment: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week.
