Role Overview

The Director of Engineering will oversee the daily manufacturing operations of pharmaceutical products at Viatris's Inverin and Casla facilities in Galway, Ireland. As part of senior site leadership, this role drives corporate culture, strategic planning, and long-term site sustainability. The position commands high accountability over critical supply chain decisions, ensuring product quality, inventory management, and budgetary targets are met. It also leads long-range capacity planning initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute engineering strategies aligned to business objectives.
• Lead capital projects including facility construction, expansions, and equipment upgrades, managing related budgets and external contractors.
• Oversee process development, technology transfer, and automation efforts to boost manufacturing efficiency.
• Ensure adherence to regulatory standards such as HPRA, FDA, GMP, cGMP, ISO, and other global requirements.
• Manage validation and qualification protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ) for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
• Coordinate with Quality, Environmental Health & Safety, and Regulatory teams to maintain product safety and compliance.
• Collaborate with Operational Excellence groups to optimize HVAC, cleanrooms, water treatment, and aseptic processing systems for sterile environments.
• Champion sustainability efforts aimed at waste reduction and energy efficiency improvements.
• Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple locations and global operations.
• Foster talent development through mentoring, training, and succession planning.
• Administer engineering budgets focusing on cost control and return on investment.
• Identify and mitigate risks related to production, supply chain, and facility operations.
• Implement and advance a Reliability Centered Maintenance strategy using FMECA/FMEA techniques, trend analysis, control charts, and data review in collaboration with relevant departments.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering fields such as Mechanical, Chemical, Biomedical, Industrial, or related disciplines.
• Preferred certifications: PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt, Lean Manufacturing.
• Over 15 years of senior leadership experience in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing.
• Strong knowledge of Annex I, US, and EMA GMP regulations with hands-on regulatory audit experience.
• Expertise in aseptic processing and contamination control including cleaning and disinfection validations.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with proven ability to mentor and grow teams.
• Robust risk assessment and problem-solving capabilities.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively engage cross-functional teams.
