Assistant Editor

About the Role

Hyphen Publications is seeking a mid-level Assistant Editor with over four years of experience to join their team in Bengaluru. This role focuses on editorial development and managing the lifecycle of books, with a particular emphasis on Indian language literatures and translations.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate, edit, and improve manuscripts, including those translated from Indian languages.
• Collaborate with authors, translators, freelance editors, proofreaders, designers, and production staff to ensure quality outputs.
• Assist the Editor in acquisitions, editorial planning, and overseeing the publishing catalog.
• Simultaneously manage multiple book projects by monitoring schedules, deadlines, manuscripts, proofs, and production phases.
• Ensure a smooth editorial and production workflow, meeting all deadlines consistently.
• Proofread text for social media and other communication channels.
• Maintain high standards of editorial accuracy, quality, and consistency.
• Contribute to creating and refining efficient editorial workflows and systems.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

• A minimum of four years' experience in publishing, editing, or related roles.
• Exceptional editorial and proofreading aptitude with meticulous attention to detail.
• Deep interest and knowledge of Indian literary traditions and cultures.
• Experience working with translated literature is highly valued.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English; knowledge of at least one Indian language is advantageous.
• Strong organizational and project management capabilities.
• Ability to work autonomously, demonstrate ownership, and collaborate effectively with authors and team members.
