Applied AI Engineer, Global Public Sector

Overview

Scale's Global Public Sector division focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence to solve important challenges faced by governments worldwide. This team works on developing bespoke AI solutions impacting millions, generating quality training datasets for national large language models, and providing AI-related advisory and upskilling services.

Key Duties

• Collaborate with public sector clients to gain deep insights into their issues and devise AI-powered strategies.
• Create and deploy complete AI applications in production environments using cutting-edge AI research and available open-source models.
• Work alongside multidisciplinary teams, including data annotation experts, to produce superior datasets for training purposes.
• Develop and uphold rigorous evaluation protocols to guarantee AI model reliability and performance.
• Engage with clients occasionally through travel, averaging about two weeks quarterly.
• Contribute to enhancing AI capabilities in the public sector by sharing practical knowledge and expertise.

Candidate Profile

• Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline, or demonstrate equivalent experience.
• Have at least 7 years of post-degree engineering experience with proven skills in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or C++.
• Bring minimum 2 years of hands-on AI/ML experience in production setups, including deploying deep learning systems, constructing generative or agent-based AI solutions, or establishing evaluation pipelines.
• Familiarity with cloud ML platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure is essential.
• Demonstrate robust analytical skills and a data-driven mindset to optimize machine learning models and datasets.
• Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication capabilities to work efficiently within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in startup environments, especially in founding engineering roles.
• Track record of building and launching enterprise-grade AI solutions at scale.
• Proficiency in Arabic, particularly for projects focused on language models.

Additional Information for Qatar-Based Candidates

Applicants residing or intending to work in Qatar must have the necessary visas and permits issued by local authorities.
