About the Role

The Animal Genomics Team seeks a motivated individual passionate about livestock research and direct animal interaction to join as a Research Associate. This role involves generating vital livestock data to support genetic improvements across New Zealand’s sheep, cattle, and deer sectors.

The position is hands-on and diverse, including project planning, collecting and processing data and samples, and ensuring quality control. Work occurs across various New Zealand locations such as research farms, commercial enterprises, breeder farms, and meat processing facilities.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and collaboratively, locally and during travel away from Invermay. Responsibilities include coordinating and executing livestock data and sample collection, managing and validating research data, and addressing practical challenges encountered in field research. The role demands initiative, problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a dedication to high-quality data, animal welfare, and health and safety standards.

This is a full-time position based at the Invermay campus, with frequent travel across New Zealand.

About You

• You hold a tertiary qualification in animal science, genetics, or a related scientific discipline and/or have relevant experience in research or stud breeding environments.
• You possess advanced livestock handling skills, particularly with sheep and cattle, and demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare.
• You can effectively plan and lead livestock data collection projects with meticulous attention to detail and commitment to data integrity.
• You have excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, enabling effective collaboration with farmers, breeders, industry stakeholders, and scientists.
• You are willing and able to travel extensively, including working away from home, and hold a valid driver's license.
