Role Overview

We invite skilled Android Developers to join our dynamic digital delivery teams, shaping impactful digital services that benefit millions across the UK. Working alongside designers, product managers, QA specialists, and other developers in an agile setup, you will design, create, and maintain Android applications that are robust, user-focused, and accessible.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and sustain high-quality Android apps primarily using Kotlin.
• Convert user and business needs into dependable and maintainable technical designs.
• Produce clean, testable, and maintainable code adhering to modern Android development standards.
• Engage in collaborative teamwork with cross-functional professionals within an agile environment.
• Take part in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decision-making processes.
• Implement automated testing and participate in CI/CD workflows.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot technical problems, software bugs, and performance bottlenecks.
• Integrate security, privacy, accessibility, resilience, and performance considerations throughout development.
• Document technical details and share knowledge within the team.
• Establish and uphold software development standards, patterns, and best practices.
• Stay updated on Android platform and related mobile technology innovations.
• Promote an inclusive and cooperative development culture, mentoring where applicable.

Essential Requirements

• Demonstrable professional experience creating Android applications.
• Strong command of Kotlin programming language.
• Profound knowledge of Android SDK and its ecosystem.
• Familiarity with modern Android architectural patterns and development practices.
• Experience integrating mobile apps with backend APIs.
• Proficiency in automated unit and UI testing techniques.
• Working knowledge of Git and contemporary software version control practices.
• Understanding of core software engineering principles such as modularity, maintainability, clean code, and version control.
• Capability to analyze and rectify application defects and optimize performance.

Desirable Skills

• Familiarity with Java and experience maintaining or modernising legacy Java codebases.
• Expertise in Jetpack Compose and/or traditional Android View systems.
• Experience with Android Jetpack components and modern architectural tools.
• Knowledge of asynchronous programming models, especially Kotlin Coroutines.
• Understanding of Android application architecture and design patterns.
• Experience with continuous integration/delivery pipelines and automated deployment.
• Exposure to cloud services and RESTful API integrations.
• Awareness of mobile security best practices and data protection.
• Experience developing applications compliant with recognized accessibility standards.
• Familiarity with monitoring, analytics, and performance management tools for mobile applications.
