About the Role
Join the University of Waikato as an Analytics Engineer to help develop a trusted enterprise data platform using Databricks, shaping analytics to support smarter decision-making and transforming reporting utilizing AI-driven methods.
This pivotal role merges data engineering, analytics, and business analysis responsibilities: translating raw source data into reliable, well-structured, and business-ready datasets. Collaborate with university stakeholders to capture reporting and insight requirements, define business entities and measures, and convert these into canonical and dimensional data models.
You will build a governed semantic layer underpinning Power BI, Databricks dashboards, and natural language analytics systems such as Genie. A key focus includes migrating legacy data warehouse reports onto the modern platform, redesigning data models and logic to current standards ensuring accuracy, thorough documentation, and trustworthiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Construct and enhance a new enterprise data platform based on Databricks technology.
- Develop dependable datasets for reporting and AI applications.
- Modernize analytics capabilities incorporating AI tools and agentic workflows.
- Engage with stakeholders to harmonize data definitions and maintain semantic data governance.
- Rebuild legacy reporting logic with improved standards for consistency and reliability.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of three years in analytics engineering, BI development, data modelling, business analysis, or related analytical roles.
- Proficient in SQL and expert understanding of dimensional modelling principles such as facts, dimensions, and star schemas.
- Experience in constructing semantic data models or governed metrics within platforms like Power BI.
- Familiarity with DataOps methodologies including version control and code promotion workflows.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, especially in requirements gathering and data concept articulation.
- Adoption and practical experience with AI-augmented development tools.
Additional desirable skills include Databricks, Microsoft Fabric or Snowflake familiarity, layered or Medallion architecture knowledge, Python programming, data testing and governance expertise, natural-language analytics experience, and AI-powered BI tools such as Databricks Genie.
Experience in designing or implementing agentic workflows or holding relevant industry certifications would also be advantageous.
