About the Position
Oranga Tamariki is seeking dedicated individuals for permanent full-time Allied Support Worker roles based in the Wellington region including CBD, Lower and Upper Hutt, Porirua, and Kāpiti sites. These roles provide crucial operational support to frontline Social Work teams to help meet ongoing service demands and strengthen team continuity.
Role Overview
Allied Support Workers function under the guidance of qualified Social Workers and supervisors. The role supports positive outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau by enabling Social Workers to focus on statutory and professional duties. This role is non-regulated, does not require social work training, and does not involve managing caseloads or performing social work activities.
Key Duties
- Providing regional support based on operational priorities, which may involve travel within and occasionally beyond the region.
- Supporting caregiver recruitment, engagement, and community outreach efforts.
- Coordinating caregiver training and facilitating learning and development programs.
- Assisting in caregiver assessments, approvals, ongoing support planning, and provision.
- Helping with placement and matching tasks through information gathering, caregiver profile creation, and placement coordination.
- Building and maintaining positive working relationships with caregivers, whānau, community groups, and internal stakeholders.
- Occasional work outside standard business hours as needed.
Candidate Profile
This safety-critical children's work role requires individuals with sound judgment, emotional resilience, and reliability. Suitable applicants will typically possess experience and skills such as:
- Community-based support or assistance roles helping individuals in need.
- Experience working with Māori and/or Pasifika cultures.
- Empathy and the ability to handle emotionally sensitive situations effectively.
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to work collaboratively with peers and various stakeholders.
- Calm and professional temperament when managing complex emotional circumstances.
- Cultural understanding especially concerning tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples' traditions.
- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Commitment to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti ō Waitangi in everyday practice.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
Qualifications and License
- A recognized qualification in Social Services is desirable but not essential.
- A clean, current full driver’s license is mandatory with willingness to operate Ministry vehicles. Historic convictions will be considered individually.
Compensation and Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary range of $68,371 to $75,501 dependent on experience, along with substantial opportunities for professional development and training within an inclusive and respectful workplace culture.
