Job description
Position Overview
We are actively looking for a detail-driven Algorithmic Trading Researcher and Market Microstructure Analyst to join our team full-time at our Abu Dhabi office. This position involves developing systematic trading algorithms, analyzing market microstructure, and optimizing execution to enhance trading performance in financial markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed quantitative research to uncover trading signals, inefficiencies, and algorithmic investment opportunities.
- Design, backtest, and optimize algorithmic trading strategies using statistical and mathematical models applied to historical market data.
- Investigate order book dynamics, including bid-ask spreads, market depth, price discovery, and liquidity formation mechanisms.
- Analyze transaction flows such as order arrivals, cancellations, trade executions, and their impacts on short-term price variation.
- Examine limit order books and queue positioning to better understand market execution behavior.
- Build statistical models to evaluate market impact, slippage, spread changes, and trading costs related to liquidity.
- Research and improve execution algorithms and order placement tactics to optimize fill rates and minimize costs.
- Execute historical backtesting and simulations to measure strategy robustness under varying market conditions.
- Assess strategies using metrics including returns, volatility, drawdown risk, Sharpe ratio, turnover, and trading fees.
- Incorporate realistic assumptions such as market frictions, fees, slippage, and execution barriers in performance evaluation.
- Identify and mitigate research biases like look-ahead bias, survivorship bias, and data leakage.
- Analyze high-frequency and intraday data patterns impacting liquidity, volatility, order flow, and pricing behavior.
- Create quantitative models for volatility estimation, forecasting, execution quality, and market impact assessment.
- Develop and maintain pipelines for data collection, cleansing, normalization, feature engineering, and analysis.
- Implement research solutions primarily in Python, with C++ or other high-performance languages as advantageous.
- Employ advanced statistical methods, time-series analysis, and optimization techniques relevant to financial searching and execution.
- Explore connections between market conditions, order book imbalances, trading signals, and returns.
- Compare execution metrics across multiple venues, order types, instruments, and market regimes.
- Collaborate with traders and engineers to convert research into practical trading and order management improvements.
- Design experimental frameworks and simulations to benchmark alternative strategies and execution methodologies.
- Monitor real-time strategy performance, observing changes in signal effectiveness and cost implications.
- Produce clear research documents, dashboards, and reports for both technical teams and investment decision makers.
- Systematically maintain version-controlled codebases, experiment data, research documentation, and datasets for reproducibility.
- Partner with software engineers to integrate, test, and enhance models in live trading environments.
- Conduct pre-trade and post-trade analyses to evaluate execution efficiency, implementation shortfall, and transaction expenses.
- Analyze the effects of market regime transitions on strategy performance and robustness.
- Apply rigorous risk management and monitoring while assessing new strategies.
- Critically check model assumptions to detect problems like overfitting or instability affecting strategy reliability.
- Stay informed about exchange regulations, structural changes in markets, and compliance requirements.
- Recommend ongoing improvements to research methods, technological infrastructure, and execution procedures.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelor's or master's degree in Quantitative Finance, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, or closely related fields.
- Experience in quantitative research, algorithmic trading, market microstructure analysis, execution analytics, or similar financial data domains.
- Comprehensive understanding of market mechanics including order types, liquidity concepts, price formation, and trade execution.
- In-depth knowledge of limit order book structures, bid-ask spread mechanics, order flow, depth of markets, and transaction cost analysis.
- Proficiency in Python programming for research tasks such as statistical modeling, data analytics, and backtesting frameworks.
- Familiarity with C++ or comparable performance-oriented programming is considered beneficial.
- Strong foundation in probability theory, statistics, linear algebra, optimization algorithms, and time-series methodologies.
- Practical experience handling historical tick data, intraday datasets, order book records, and transaction-level data.
- Capability to efficiently preprocess, clean, and analyze substantial and complex financial datasets.
- Experience with designing and implementing backtests that realistically incorporate market execution conditions.
- Knowledge of common research errors including data leakage, look-ahead bias, survivorship bias, and their avoidance.
- Understanding of quantitative metrics such as risk-adjusted returns (Sharpe ratio), volatility analysis, drawdowns, and portfolio turnover.
- Expertise in evaluating transaction costs, slippage effects, market impact, and execution quality metrics.
- Proficiency with statistical tests, regression models, feature creation, and prediction modeling techniques.
- Familiarity with Python libraries like NumPy, pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn valuable for research analysis.
- Knowledge of SQL databases, time-series data stores, or other efficient data management tools is a plus.
- Understanding of exchange communication protocols (e.g., FIX), order management systems, and execution management systems is advantageous.
- Familiarity with trading strategies including market making, optimal execution, statistical arbitrage, or high-frequency trading beneficial.
- Proven ability to formulate clear research questions and test them through rigorous experimentation.
- Exceptional analytical aptitude, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail for data validation, result interpretation, and model review.
- Ability to communicate technical insights effectively to interdisciplinary teams including traders, engineers, and management.
- Knowledge of version control (Git), automated testing methodologies, and practices promoting reproducible research is a plus.
- Awareness of trading risk controls, market conduct standards, and relevant regulatory frameworks preferred.
- Capability to manage concurrent research projects, delivering high-quality outcomes on schedule.
