About The Team
Airways Training is a registered Private Training Provider and NZQA-accredited institution offering premier aviation training globally, including in New Zealand. Their team of highly qualified instructors utilizes state-of-the-art training and simulation technology, providing ab initio training, professional development for air traffic controllers, on-the-job support, Aviation English instruction, and consultancy.
Role Overview
Due to a retirement, there is a full-time permanent position available for an Air Traffic Controller (ATC) Instructor at the Christchurch campus. Reporting to the Head of ATS Training, the instructor will develop, prepare, and deliver domestic and international ab initio ATC training and other related courses aligned with ICAO, NZ CAA, Airways, and NZQA standards. The role entails diagnosing skill gaps and facilitating skill improvement in accordance with the Centre’s training philosophy. Occasional international travel for training delivery may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure training quality with measurable, effective outcomes that exceed customer expectations.
- Contribute leadership supporting strategic and business goals of AIL Training management.
- Deliver ATC and specialized training domestically and internationally via face-to-face and virtual classrooms, and using TotalControl simulators.
- Prepare and carry out fair, transparent assessments; regularly report on student progress.
- Design curricula, syllabi, and develop course materials; research new training methods to enhance instruction.
- Perform other tasks as needed to maintain smooth operations.

The ideal candidate will be proactive and solution-focused, culturally aware, and sensitive, working well with students from diverse backgrounds.
Mandatory Qualifications and Skills
- ATC instructor and/or assessment certification.
- ATC rating in Aerodrome Control and either Procedural Approach in Class D airspace or surveillance.
- Demonstrated experience delivering on-the-job training in an operational ATC environment.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
- High attention to detail ensuring accurate and complete processes and outputs.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills to collaborate effectively with staff, management, and students.
- Strong ability to manage time efficiently and work independently to meet objectives and deadlines.
- Commitment to continuous learning with a forward-thinking and self-motivated mindset.
- Cultural sensitivity and confidence when engaging with diverse individuals.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic team and business environment, showing resilience, agility, ownership, and focus on results.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Tertiary qualification in education, aviation, or management fields.
- Experience instructing in air traffic control simulators.
- Holder of a pilot licence.
- Exposure to classroom instructional methods and/or formal training in teaching techniques.
- Experience delivering courses to adult learners who are foreign language students.
