Role Overview

As an AI Engineer at Nexus Black, you will be responsible for developing agentic systems that power our products—systems that reason, orchestrate, and provide fully traceable outputs produced through deterministic coding. You will be expected to deliver production-ready software from day one and see your work used directly by field technicians in critical environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement multi-step agentic workflows involving tool use, retrieval, and orchestration using technologies like Claude, LangChain/LangGraph, and emerging tools.
• Establish evaluation criteria defining correctness for workflows, build evaluation infrastructures including golden datasets, and enforce high standards ensuring solutions satisfy seasoned experts.
• Advance features from prototype to robust production code with capabilities including observability, tracing with LangSmith, error handling, and long-term reliability.
• Engage in customer site visits such as industrial plants and hangars to gather insights for continuous improvement of software.
• Incorporate autonomous coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) as standard tools to increase development efficiency.
• Participate actively in code reviews, design documentation, and fostering a culture of clear written communication and ownership.

Candidate Profile

• Demonstrated experience delivering production systems using large language models (LLMs) with API integration from providers like Anthropic and OpenAI, including expert level prompt engineering, agent architectures, tool integration, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
• A strong practice of developing and maintaining evaluation frameworks including golden datasets, regression tests, and reliable LLM-based judgement mechanisms to differentiate prototypes from production-grade solutions.
• Deep software engineering skills with proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript, version control with Git, automated testing, continuous integration, and prudent decision-making balancing deterministic logic against model reliance.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment requiring broad responsibilities and prioritizing shipping quality work over process formality.
• A genuine curiosity about industrial and physical environments of end users, with motivation to deeply understand their challenges to design effective AI solutions.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with large-scale retrieval infrastructure such as vector databases, hybrid search, and re-ranking techniques.
• Hands-on expertise in fine-tuning or adapting AI models where it effectively surpasses prompt engineering.
• Background in industrial sectors, field service operations, or asset-intensive environments.
• Noteworthy open-source contributions or a portfolio displaying delivered AI-driven systems.
