Job description
About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space company engaged in the creation of rockets, spacecraft, and essential subsystems that ensure global connectivity, protection, and the expansion of humanity's reach to extraterrestrial destinations such as the Moon and Mars. The company operates swiftly, manufacturing tangible hardware for impactful missions, and consistently turns challenges into everyday achievements. Join us to be part of shaping the future.
About Neutron
The Neutron team at Rocket Lab is tasked with developing the new large Neutron rocket along with its launch and testing facilities. This involves designing and testing the rocket's structures and components, operating its Archimedes engines, and establishing launch and test sites mainly across the U.S. This team offers a unique chance to contribute to the inaugural launch of a new large-scale rocket.
Role Overview
We seek an Aerodynamics Analyst to join our Thermofluids Analysis group, focused on forecasting aerodynamic and aerothermal conditions for both Electron and Neutron rocket missions throughout all stages.
Key Responsibilities
- Create aerodynamic data tables and assess vehicle behavior including stability, control effectiveness, loads, pressure profiles, and control surface designs.
- Conduct and verify CFD simulations of external airflow spanning hypersonic to subsonic speeds, analyzing aerodynamics, heating, transient effects, and flow separation.
- Model rocket plumes and interactions such as base heating, plume-induced flow separations, and impingement effects; define re-entry parameters including ballistic coefficients and compartment venting.
- Collaborate closely with design and test engineers to iterate design concepts, specify testing needs, and validate positive safety margins using numerical and physical testing.
- Work in conjunction with the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) team to facilitate safe recovery of Neutron’s first stage.
- Analyze ground test and flight data to establish maximum predicted environments, identify anomalies, and resolve sensor configuration challenges.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
- At least 1 year of professional experience in relevant industries such as aerospace, automotive, or marine.
- Strong foundation in physics and first-principles problem-solving methodology.
- Proficiency with industry-standard CFD tools like Fluent, CFX, or STAR-CCM+.
- Experience with engineering programming, particularly Python and related libraries (numpy, pandas, scipy, matplotlib).
- Ability to adapt and deliver results under tight deadlines in a high-pressure, fast-paced context.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with NX CAD and Teamcenter software suites, especially regarding model interrogation and modification for analysis purposes.
- Experience in sensor selection and data analysis for instruments such as accelerometers, strain gauges, and thermocouples.
- Knowledge of thermal modeling applications like Thermal Desktop, THERMICA, or NX SST.
- Mentorship experience with junior engineering staff.
Additional Information
Our mission focuses on leveraging space exploration to enhance life on Earth, requiring dedication, innovation, collaboration, resilience, and commitment to seemingly impossible goals. We value teamwork, humility, and a hands-on approach. Working well under pressure and meeting strict deadlines are vital.
