About the Climate Change Commission

The Climate Change Commission was formed under the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act 2019, enhancing the original 2002 Act. It plays a crucial role in shaping and enacting clear, steady climate policies across New Zealand by offering independent, expert guidance to the Government. The Commission focuses on both reducing emissions and adapting to climate impacts while tracking national progress against emission targets and adaptation plans.

Over recent years, the Commission has provided critical advice on topics such as emissions budgets, agricultural emissions pricing, emissions trading scheme settings, and the inclusion of international shipping and aviation emissions. Additionally, the Commission has completed the nation's second comprehensive climate risk assessment and monitors ongoing climate action efforts.

A special emphasis is given to incorporating Te Ao Māori perspectives and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi into the Commission's work by boosting capability and engagement with Māori communities.

Role Overview

The Advisor, Communications and Engagement will contribute across the full spectrum of communications and engagement activities supporting the Commission’s work under the Climate Change Response Act. Responsibilities include providing strategic advice, crafting content, planning engagements, and assisting with program execution. The role will work with multiple project teams and provide broad support across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Strengthen key stakeholder relationships through effective engagement and support evidence-gathering initiatives.
• Translate complex climate policy information into clear, relatable messages tailored to different audiences.
• Design and implement audience-centered communication and engagement strategies.
• Create materials such as key messages, press releases, presentations, social media posts, and organize webinars for project-specific needs.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive culture within the team and wider organization.
• Integrate cultural responsiveness by embedding Māori language, customs, and Treaty principles into all activities.

• Knowledge of government processes, political landscapes, and Treaty of Waitangi principles including Te Ao Māori perspectives.
• High personal integrity and ethical standards.

An ideal candidate holds a relevant tertiary qualification and at least one year of communications, engagement, or media experience. Additional experience in climate change topics, science communication, or journalism is advantageous.

Additional Information
