Job description
Role Overview
We are looking for a proficient, analytical, and detail-focused Database Administrator to oversee, maintain, safeguard, and enhance enterprise database systems. The role requires ensuring database uptime, efficiency, security, backups, recovery plans, and seamless business operations by collaborating with application developers, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity teams, and business stakeholders. The position focuses on administration tasks such as performance tuning, monitoring, security enforcement, upgrades, migrations, and ensuring high availability.
Key Duties
- Set up, upgrade, configure, and sustain database management systems for production and test environments.
- Handle databases including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other enterprise platforms.
- Track database health metrics such as availability, capacity, and performance.
- Optimize database operations with performance tuning, query refining, indexing, and storage management.
- Address database errors, bottlenecks, deadlocks, connectivity problems, and failures.
- Develop and manage backup, restore, and disaster recovery protocols.
- Implement and validate business continuity and disaster recovery measures.
- Configure high-availability and failover solutions as necessary.
- Administer users, roles, permissions, authentication, and access control for databases.
- Apply database security approaches, including encryption and auditing, to monitor and safeguard data.
- Conduct routine database upkeep, integrity assessments, statistics updates, and index maintenance.
- Assist in database migrations, upgrades, patching, consolidation, and platform upgrades.
- Collaborate with developers to design schemas, procedures, triggers, and efficient queries.
- Support application teams across development lifecycles and troubleshoot production issues.
- Plan future database capacity and infrastructure needs.
- Document database structures, configurations, procedures, and recovery strategies.
- Engage in incident, problem, change, and release management.
- Investigate and permanently resolve recurring database issues.
- Support hybrid and cloud database environments as part of modernization efforts.
- Automate routine database management and monitoring tasks.
- Ensure databases comply with organizational IT policies, security standards, audits, and regulations.
- Prepare performance, availability, capacity, security, and incident reports for leadership.
- Continuously assess and recommend database technology improvements for enhanced scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Demonstrated experience in Database Administration, Database Engineering, Systems Administration, or related IT functions.
- Proficient with one or more major database platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
- Strong command of SQL, database structures, indexing, query tuning, and performance optimization.
- Experienced in database backup, recovery, replication, migration, and disaster recovery implementations.
- Knowledgeable in High Availability configurations, clustering, replication, and failover solutions.
- Experience managing databases on Windows and/or Linux systems.
- Solid grasp of database security practices including user and permission management, encryption, and auditing.
- Skilled at resolving intricate database and application performance challenges.
- Familiarity with cloud-based databases from Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud is advantageous.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools to track database performance and availability preferred.
- Understanding of IT service management processes such as ITIL, incident, change, and production support.
- Ability to script or automate tasks using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or related tools is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving aptitude.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain composure under pressure in live environments.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Willingness to participate in on-call or after-hours support when necessary.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Certifications such as Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle, AWS Database Specialty, PostgreSQL, or ITIL strengthen candidacy.
