The Gateway School seeks an experienced Learning Specialist to assist the Director of Language and Literacy in overseeing the implementation of the School’s reading and writing programs. The Learning Specialist will support classroom instruction by assessing the strengths and needs of students and will provide information to classroom teachers, faculty, parents and specialized personnel in order to ensure effective, direct instruction of language, literacy and critical thinking skills. Further, the Learning Specialist will administer informal and formal assessments to monitor student progress and to inform the delivery of diagnostic instruction. The ideal candidate is an experienced Learning Specialist with a strong desire to work in a collaborative environment dedicated to ongoing professional growth and a commitment to teaching students with language-based learning disabilities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Special Education or Speech and Language Pathology
  • Post Master’s Reading/Literacy Specialist, IMSLEC or CALT Certification preferred
  • A minimum of five years of related experience, which includes experience implementing multisensory, explicit instruction
  • Training in and experience teaching using an Orton-Gillingham based reading program and The Hochman Method
  • Experience with instructional coaching
  • Independent school experience preferred
  • Experience administering and interpreting educational assessments
  • Knowledge of the cognitive, linguistic, and developmental needs of students as they pertain to literacy acquisition and the development of reading and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and experience with, diversity, equity, and/or inclusion work.
