Position Summary
The Director of Health & Performance Innovation has expertise in both applied sport scientist and data science, and plays a critical role in the intelligent use of data across the Health & Performance Department. This position is responsible for collecting, analyzing, reporting and modeling medical and performance data to provide actionable insights for coaches, medical staff, and performance specialists. This individual is a leader in research and innovation for the Health & Performance Department, including mentorship and supervision of PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, and emerging health and sport science companies.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Collection & Management:
- Oversee the integration of data from key sources, including Zebra player tracking, force plates, dynamometry, computer vision, and other performance metrics.
- Provide real-time feedback to athletes and staff as data is collected.
- Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and consistency of data collection methods.
- Data Analysis & Visualization:
- Use statistical programming languages (R, Python) to clean, analyze, and interpret large datasets.
- Develop statistical, machine learning and AI models that predict changes in injury risk factors, workload trends, and performance indicators.
- Create interactive dashboards and reports that translate complex data into actionable insights (descriptive, predictive, prescriptive) for coaches and medical staff.
- Applied Sport Science & Performance Optimization:
- Provide data-driven recommendations on training loads, recovery protocols, and injury mitigation strategies.
- Conduct research and stay up-to-date on emerging trends in sports science, biomechanics, and performance analytics.
- Collaborate with athletic trainers, strength coaches, and medical professionals to integrate sport science principles into daily training routines.
- Technology & Innovation:
- Participate in mentorship and supervision of PhD students and post-doctoral fellows
- Evaluate and implement new technologies that enhance data collection and athlete monitoring.
- Ensure seamless integration of sport science data with performance management systems.
Qualifications & Skills
- PhD in Sport Science, Data Science, Biomechanics, or a related field.
- Proficiency in R or Python for statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization.
- Familiarity with AI and machine-learning tools.
- Experience working with GPS tracking, force plates, dynamometry, and athlete monitoring systems with elite athletes.
- Strong understanding of physiological and biomechanical principles related to high-performance sport.
- Ability to translate complex data into practical recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
- Previous experience in professional or elite sports preferred, particularly in football.
