Job Summary
The Assistant Controller plays a crucial role in the financial operations of the company, supporting the Controller in overseeing accounting processes, compliance, and financial reporting. This position is responsible for managing sales tax, leases, accounts payable, business licensing, and leadership responsibilities to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Ensure compliance with state and local sales tax regulations, including filing and remitting tax payments.
- Oversee business licensing requirements and ensure all locations maintain current permits and registrations.
- Support the audit process by preparing documentation and coordinating with external auditors.
Accounts Payable & Expense Management
- Supervise accounting functions, ensuring timely and accurate vendor payments.
- Implement controls to manage expenses, prevent fraud, and optimize cash flow.
- Work with the accounts payable team to streamline invoice processing and payment approvals.
Lease Accounting & Fixed Assets
- Manage lease accounting, including tracking lease agreements, renewals, and compliance.
- Maintain accurate records of fixed assets and depreciation schedules.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Provide leadership and guidance to accounting staff, ensuring strong financial controls and efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, automation, and reporting.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (operations, HR) to support business initiatives.
Other Duties
- Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
- Support special projects related to financial system implementations, internal controls, or process enhancements.
- Stay updated on industry trends, accounting standards, and regulatory changes affecting the retail sector.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the retail or food & bev industry.
- Strong knowledge of sales tax compliance, lease accounting, and accounts payable processes.
- Experience with ERP systems.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with multiple departments.
