Position Summary

Responsibilities

Within the context of a patent and family-centered model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care (“Providence”), we are seeking qualified candidates from the Department of Medicine for the role of Lead Physician, SPH Medicine Medical Staff Lines at Providence Health Care. This lead position supports Medical Staff in effectively managing and delivering patient care, with a specific focus on the Medicine Medical Staff Lines at St. Paul’s Hospital. Reporting to the Physician Program Director (PPD) and Division Head, Internal Medicine, the Lead Physician will play an essential role in overseeing processes, including recruitment, privileging, and scheduling, in collaboration with and under the guidance of the Division Head, Internal Medicine. Responsibilities will include orientation for new staff, ongoing communication with Program Leadership, and regular engagement with the PPD and Division Head. The Physician Lead will have the following deliverables:

  • Collaborate with the Division Head to manage the recruitment, privileging, and scheduling of Medical Staff within the Medicine Medical Staff Lines, ensuring guidelines and expectations are clearly established and met.
  • Oversee the orientation process for new staff within Medicine Medical Staff Lines, including site-specific orientation and practice guidelines.
  • Attend meetings as delegated by the PPD or Division Head, contributing to discussions on program development, quality improvement, and care delivery.
  • Act as a liaison with Program Staff, including Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNL), fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Meet regularly with the PPD and Division Head to provide updates, align on objectives, and address any arising issues.
  • Contribute to quality improvement (QI) and patient safety initiatives, including morbidity and mortality reviews.
  • Provide input on optimizing care models and patient flow within Medicine Medical Staff Lines.

In completing their responsibilities, the Lead Physician will work in collaboration with the appropriate Program Director to manage the quality of services provided. The Lead Physician is accountable to the Vice President of Medical Affairs, through the Medicine Department Head, for academic and professional practice matters.

The time commitment under this contract is approximately up to 6 hours per week, with a leadership stipend in accordance with the Health Employers Association of British Columbia Medical Leadership Compensation Framework. This position is for a 2-year term, with the possibility of renewal.

Qualifications

Candidates must be appointed to the Medical Staff at Providence and be a member of the Department of Medicine, and must:

  • demonstrate strong leadership skills including the ability to effectively manage teams;
  • have excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • have the ability to deal with a host of interdisciplinary issues involving professional and resource allocation challenges;
  • have exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to help others to use the same analytical thought processes; and
  • have credibility among their peers and the ability to build strategic partnerships across Providence.
