General Summary

The Assistant Vice President of Training for Public Transit Bus Operators is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of training programs for bus operators within the public transit system. This role ensures that all training initiatives align with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. The Assistant Vice President will work collaboratively with various departments to enhance the skills and knowledge of bus operators, ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused transit services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Training Program Development:
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve training programs for new and existing bus operators.
  • Develop training materials, manuals, and resources that reflect current industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure training content is relevant and effective.
  • Leadership and Management:
  • Supervise and mentor training staff, providing guidance and support to enhance their professional development.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive training environment that encourages learning and growth.
  • Manage the training budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure all training programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies.
  • Stay updated on changes in regulations and industry standards, adjusting training programs as necessary.
  • Performance Evaluation:
  • Develop metrics and evaluation methods to assess the effectiveness of training programs.
  • Analyze training outcomes and make data-driven recommendations for improvements.
  • Conduct regular assessments of bus operators to ensure competency and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collaboration and Communication
  • Work closely with the Operations, Safety, and Human Resources departments to align training initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including management, staff, and external partners, to promote training programs and initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at industry conferences and training workshops.
  • Customer service focus.
  • Emphasize the importance of customer service in all training programs, ensuring bus operators are equipped to provide a positive experience for transit users.
  • Incorporate feedback from customers and operators to enhance training content and delivery.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Transportation Management, Public Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred. (Every two years of experience directly related to the duties of the job, above and beyond the minimum experience requirement, can substitute for every one year of required education.)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in training and development, with at least 3 years in a leadership role, preferably within the public transit or transportation sector.
  • Experience organizing and monitoring training programs across several departments.
  • Exceptional time- and project management skills.
  • Proven experience in curriculum development and instructional design.
  • Proficient in using training management software and other relevant technology.
  • Strong knowledge of public transit operations, safety regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Ability to analyze data and make informed decisions to improve training effectiveness.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum qualifications.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License CDL with Passenger Endorsement is required.
