Special Education Curriculum Designer/Trainer

The Ministry of Education in Grenada, Eastern Caribbean has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Special Education Curriculum Designer/Trainer. In Grenada there are three Special Education schools and two support institutions within the education system. In order to find a balance between the teaching of life skills and academics, the Special Education Unit has resorted to a hybrid approach; however, the challenge is that there isn’t a standardized academic curriculum, only a life skills curriculum. The support of a PCRV has been requested to assist in developing a standardized curriculum that ensures a balance between the academic and life skills students in this population require.

The PCRV will work collaboratively with management and staff support the five Special Education schools/institutions and mainstream schools with special needs students and co-develop a standardized academic curriculum that is tailored for use at the special education schools. The main objective of this assignment is the creation of a standardized curriculum that will ensure that the content taught and measurement for skills acquired is standardized across the Special Education System and equipping personnel with the relevant skills to ensure the implementation of the standardized curriculum and the sustainability of remedial programs.

Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in the Eastern Caribbean together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.

Required Skills

• Master’s degree in special education and at least 3 years’ experience in special education OR a bachelor’s degree in education or other relevant field and at least 5 years of experience in special education.
• Experience conducting assessments.
• Experience in curriculum development.
• Experience developing and/or conducting education-related training sessions.
• Experience working with system leaders and teachers
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Willingness to persevere through challenges (travel, climate, interacting with multiple people and agencies etc.)
• Willingness to approach the position through the Peace Corps’ philosophy on development
• Proficient computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Publisher and Internet.
• Ability to work independently and with a team, and maintain a positive working relationship with colleagues
• Ability to perform multiple tasks under tight deadlines without sacrificing quality or accuracy.
• Experience in co-facilitating, co-planning and mentoring
• Strong attention to detail and follow-through
• High tolerance for ambiguity and high level of flexibility
