Job Description:

Biology – Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, invites applications for two full-time, Visiting faculty positions in the Biology department beginning in August of the 2025-2026 academic year, with possible renewal upon mutual agreement for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Candidates are expected to be trained broadly in Biology, but strong preference will be given to individuals with teaching and research background in physiology, genetics, or microbiology. A successful candidate will teach 24 credits per academic year (standard courses are 4 credits). Primary instructional responsibilities will include some combination of the following: 1) an upper-level human physiology course with lab (BIOL 362-Human Physiology); 2) an introductory/clinical microbiology course with lab (BIOL 171); 3) a genetics course for majors (BIOL 250), 4) introductory biology courses (BIOL 130-Molecules to Cells and BIOL 140-Organisms to Ecosystems) and 5) an upper level biology course based on the candidate’s background as needed. We are particularly interested in candidates with a demonstrated passion for working with a diverse student population and strongly encourage applicants to address how they will further diversity and inclusion in their teaching and work with students in their cover letter.

Our department is among the largest on campus and includes more than a dozen faculty with a range of specializations. Our faculty are active throughout the college in teaching and service, and we seek candidates with a commitment to collaboration and the value of a liberal education. These appointments will be at the rank of visiting instructor or visiting assistant professor, depending on whether a terminal degree is completed. Visiting faculty may also have access to laboratory space and the ability to work with students on projects if desired. All faculty at Augustana are invited to engage in professional development and mentoring opportunities consistent with their needs throughout their appointment at the college.

Requirements:

Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed their Ph.D. by the time of appointment, although ABD candidates will also be considered. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the potential for effective undergraduate teaching and a commitment to fostering equity and inclusion.

Additional Information:

The budgeted compensation for this position ranges from $43,000 to $46,000 per year based upon minimum and preferred qualifications, education, experience, skills, and abilities. Actual placement within the range will depend upon experience, education, research, and other relevant factors.
