Objective
Appanoose County Extension and Outreach is looking for a reliable and energetic summer assistant. This position provides assistance to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Appanoose County, for the organization and delivery of youth programs and assisting with 4-H events at the Appanoose County Fair. This is a seasonal position, with up to 220 hours throughout the summer. The summer assistant will be responsible for implementing 3 project area workshops that target 4-H youth, assist with county fair preparation, and oversee Youth Council summer activities.
Responsibilities
Nature and Requirements of Position:
- This position provides assistance to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach: Appanoose County for organization and delivery of youth programs and assisting with 4-H events at the Appanoose County Fair.
- The position requires skills in written and oral communication and skill in delivery of a wide variety of topics relating to the Iowa 4-H Priority Areas.
- A Summer Youth Assistant will help execute 3 youth project workshops.
- These workshop target youth ages K-12th grade, allowing them to engage in positive youth development activities and education.
- Provide assistance to the office staff where needed, support county fair programming, support/help 4-H programs/tasks, and any other office functions needed.
Specific Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare for, and implement summer educational workshops.
- Demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of children and an appreciation of different learning styles.
- Provide evaluation tools for educational programs.
- Well organized and responsive to kids’ needs.
- Work cooperatively with other adults as well as with children.
- Manage and complete tasks as assigned in a timely manner.
- Oversee the Appanoose County Youth Council activities during the Appanoose County Fair.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications for Employment:
- Educational background or experience in youth development, nutrition, and/or agriculture preferred, but not required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Employment contingent on successful background screening.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision from professional staff and supervise volunteers.
- Ability to work as a team to develop and deliver programming.
- Willing to learn new skills.
- Employment contingent on availability of proposed job schedule.
Additional Information
Demands Of Position
- This position is seasonal, with up to 220 hours throughout the summer. Applicant must be available May 19th, 2025 -August 5th, 2025, with limited flexibility on specific dates and times.
- This position will involve considerable bending, sitting, standing, and reaching, supervising recreation (primarily outside), and other activities as planned or assigned.
- Ability to work outside in the summer weather, for up to two hours at a time.
- Lifting of 40 lbs. or less on occasion.
- Applicant will be required to pass a background check.
Supervision
- Report to Appanoose County Extension Council and Regional Director.
- Duties assigned by the Regional Director, County Youth Coordinator (CYC), and Office Assistant (OA).
