Job Description
The Office of Animal Resources at the University of Iowa is seeking an Animal Caretaker. In the role of an Animal Caretaker, you will join a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians and other animal caretakers where you will provide husbandry to animals used in research. Husbandry includes feeding, cage sanitation, room cleaning and health assessment. Animal Caretakers are provided training and encouraged to become certified. This position functions under direct supervision, performs the work necessary to maintain compliance with federal, state, and/or university regulations. Overtime is required; staff will also work a rotating holiday schedule.
Shift Details
7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Sunday – Thursday, days off are Friday and Saturday
7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Tuesday – Saturday, days off are Sunday and Monday
7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday, days off are Saturday and Sunday

Recruiting Incentive
Recruitment incentive available; Qualified candidates are eligible for a sign-on bonus depending on the shift hired to work.
Mon – Fri = up to $2000
Tues – Sat = up to $3000
Sun – Thurs = up to $3000

About The Office Of Animal Resources
The University of Iowa provides a centralized animal care program through the Office of Animal Resources which reports to the Vice President for Research. The program includes animal housing facilities in the Colleges of Medicine, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Public Health. Additional sites affiliated with this program are the State Hygienic Laboratory in Ankeny, IA, the Iowa Raptor Project located near Lake MacBride, and the Lakeside Laboratory located near Lake Okoboji in Western Iowa.
The Office of Animal Resources (OAR) provides the expertise, care, and resources necessary for the maintenance of research animals. The OAR’s mission is preservation of the University’s animal research privilege and maintenance of a quality animal care and use program.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous animal caretaking experience in laboratory research environment, veterinary office, or animal hospital.
- Previous experience using cleaning/sanitation equipment.
- An application that is thorough including a complete work history listing specific duties and care performed.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with others and to follow oral and written instructions.
- Be detail oriented.
