History: The Greater Mondawmin Coordinating Council, Inc. (GMCC) was incorporated in 1976 by residents to create an umbrella organization representing the community associations and block clubs clustered around the Mondawmin Mall. It represents eight active, affiliated neighborhood organizations in West Baltimore. In 2023, GMCC received funding to bring on a full-time professional staff to support the ongoing efforts of community leaders and volunteers amidst large scale renewed investment in our area.

Mission: GMCC’s mission is to build communities by providing service and advocacy for improved literacy, housing, educational, recreational, workforce, and cultural opportunities for people who live and work within its geographic boundaries. We envision a healthy, safe, and clean community of empowered businesses, faith-based organizations, homeowners, and schools.

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Outreach and Communications will work to ensure effective communication and coordination with Greater Mondawmin residents, affiliated neighborhood associations, community leaders, area schools, and non-profit partners. They will regularly attend meetings and events hosted by our affiliates and partners to share community updates, report back on identified needs and opportunities, and work together with the Executive Director and Assistant Director of Partnerships and Development in supporting and executing effective communication strategies. The role will require not only comfortability walking the neighborhood engaging with residents, but also the ability to synthesize and post information to our website, social media platforms, and monthly newsletters.

We are a small team with a big vision. We seek to empower all staff members to take ownership and to develop professional experience in all aspects of operating a small non-profit organization, building relationships, and supporting leadership development, partnerships, and programs.

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Develop community engagement strategies, with a focus on building community leadership, across all project areas.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings sponsored by affiliated associations and institutional partners.
  • Recruit volunteers and facilitate volunteer team meetings in which neighbors collaborate in working towards shared goals.
  • Staff and/or manage volunteers to table at events throughout the community to engage residents and raise awareness of GMCC.
  • Provide assistance in seeking, writing proposals for, and reporting on funding opportunities.
  • Provide updates to Executive Director for dissemination to board members, funders, and government officials.
  • Support ongoing and newly developed programming opportunities, including legacy resident support, vacant lot maintenance efforts, community cleanups, greening programs, summer youth employment, resident leadership initiatives, a mobile-community toolkit, and more.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in community engagement, community organizing, and/or policy advocacy.
  • Volunteer management experience.
  • Experience with social media and/or web design.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software and tracking information on spreadsheets.
  • Proven ability to use collaborative processes and partnerships that create alignment around shared goals and plans.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule, including frequent nights and weekends.
  • Familiarity with the Greater Mondawmin community, its history, and its assets.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of GMCC, a love for Baltimore, and passion for working with diverse populations.
  • A self-motivated, self-starter professional with strong work ethic and moral standards.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Additional Information

Job type: full time; hybrid, with three (3) days per week in office and flexibility around evening and weekend meetings and events.

Salary: $50,000-$60,000/year

PTO Breakdown: fifteen (15) vacation days, five (5) sick days, and five (5) personal days per year

Schedule: Primarily M-F, but will include some evening and weekend responsibilities
