Unit Highlights

  • Promote positive coping for patients and families during healthcare experiences by providing support, education, and creative interventions to help children and families navigate healthcare challenges with resilience and emotional regulation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team and child life peers to foster teamwork and promote exceptional patient care.
  • Apply assessment skills to gain a comprehensive understanding of patient and family coping.
  • Incorporate a variety of interventions to include play, self-expression, and socialization to reduce stress and anxiety for patients and families while providing opportunities to promote mastery and control.

Schedule: Full Time

Shift: Tuesday-Friday 10:00am-8:30pm and one weekend day every other month. This position serves our inpatient and outpatient pediatric units.

At AdventHealth, child life specialists play a crucial role in promoting positive experiences for both children and families throughout their healthcare experience. Child life specialists focus on the psychosocial development of children, provide emotional support, developmentally appropriate information, and play opportunities to increase understanding and coping with medical procedures, diagnoses, pain management and grief. Child life specialists also address the needs of siblings or other children affected by a patient’s illness/diagnosis. Child life specialists at AdventHealth utilize play and self-expressive activities as primary resources to minimize the stress and anxiety patients and families may face during healthcare experiences. Child life specialists are highly respected and valued by both multidisciplinary team members and administration at AdventHealth. Child life specialists actively participate in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

The Value You’ll Bring To The Team

  • Assess the developmental needs and risk factors of infants-young adults and provide resources appropriate to promote positive coping skills and diversional needs while establishing therapeutic relationships.
  • Utilize researched based best practice methods and modalities of preparing pediatric patients for stressful healthcare experiences and procedures.
  • Provide emotional support to assist with patient/family coping and utilize stress reduction techniques to facilitate positive coping during procedures and throughout the healthcare experience.
  • Utilize play as a primary resource for patients/siblings to enhance coping, promote opportunities for mastery/control and socialization while utilizing all technology and innovative resources available.
  • Support education and skills of interdisciplinary team to advocate/enhance atraumatic care and comfort techniques throughout AdventHealth and serve as a resource for staff.
  • Receive and complete referrals from interdisciplinary staff to assist with coping and adjustment of patients with acute and chronic illnesses.
  • Provide support at end of life for siblings and family members of pediatric patients including but not limited to age-appropriate education, memory making, and room visits.

Qualifications

The Expertise And Experiences You’ll Need To Succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Education, Recreation Therapy, Child Development, Psychology or related field
  • Child life internship must be completed by date of hire
  • Must become certified as a child life specialist within one year of date of hire.
