Summary

Reports to Manager Data Architecture. The Data Engineer I assists in developing maintaining and optimizing data pipelines and architectures that support the healthcare system’s data initiatives. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to build on premise and cloud-native solutions ensures that data systems are scalable secure and optimized for performance. Utilizes cloud platforms data engineering best practices and modern data tools. Streamlines data management processes improving data quality fosters collaboration and provides a solid foundation for informed decision-making across the entire healthcare system.

Responsibilities

Assists in building and maintaining data processing systems. Works with senior engineers to ensure data pipelines are efficient scalable and secure. Supports efforts to reduce data duplication and inefficiencies across vendor-supplied and internal data warehouses and lakes.

Conducts basic analysis of data sources to understand their potential value. Helps profile and organize existing data sources under the guidance of senior engineers. Produces well-documented data infrastructure that can be maintained for long-term use.

Supports the development of automated data validation processes including basic data mapping and validation rules. Helps identify and reports data validation errors quickly works with senior team members to perform root cause analysis and resolve issues.

Integrates and ingests data from a variety of sources including clinical financial and third-party data. Participates in the design testing and development of Extract Transform Load (ETL) processes ensures data movement and transformation maintain integrity.

Documents data processes tools and pipelines with a focus on making documentation accessible to data users. Helps maintain a unified data catalog and data model by contributing to data mapping efforts and collaborating with organizational partners on new data requirements.

Supports efforts to build a centralized data repository that improves access to high-quality reliable data for data scientists enabling them to focus on more advanced tasks.

Collaborates with and learns from senior engineers. Actively participates in team discussions fosters a culture of learning and collaboration.

Assists with cloud migration and data infrastructure modernization initiatives. Monitors resource usage under supervision and learns techniques for optimizing data processing to reduce capacity demands without compromising functionality.

Collaborates with data governance teams to support safer and more effective data handling practices.

Maintains a passion for innovation and continuous learning including willingness to acquire skills in data documentation data validation techniques scalable data systems; to gain the ability to work with large complex datasets; and to develop an understanding of data management standards for the healthcare industry.

Other Information

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Bachelor?s Degree in STEM-related field or equivalent education/experience.

Basic knowledge of data structures ETL processes and common transformation methods.

Experience

EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:

6 months of data engineering experience or equivalent gained through professional work personal projects academic work or internship.

Experience with architecting scalable data systems and working with large complex datasets.

Skills

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Work Environment And Physical Requirements

Requires the visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.

This is a remote position with the option to travel to sites in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts as needed.

Employee will be responsible to establish a secure workspace environment to protect the confidentiality of sensitive information. Sensitive information includes confidential information protected health information (PHI) and protected identifiable information (PII).

Employee will be responsible for costs associated with setting up furnishing and managing their remote employee workspace and for costs of maintaining appropriate internet connectivity to access Brown University Health Information Services resources.

Independent Action

Performs independently within broad scope of department policies and practices.

Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
