Position: Dairy Cattle Farm Operator

Location: Bodalla, New South Wales 2545

Salary: $65,835 – $73,150

Longflat is a family run business milking 350 cows on a split calving pattern.

We have a 140 Hectare milking platform with pivot irrigation. A self-sufficient, grass based, operation producing all fodder on farm.

The dairy is a 22 aside swing over herringbone, with all calves raised on farm through a robotic feed system.

About You

The successful applicant will ideally have previous experience in a similar environment, however, we also welcome applications from those who are looking to build their skills in a stable, long term and fulfilling role.

  • You must be reliable, physically fit and willing to work as part of a team
  • Have the knowledge and skills to perform set procedures such as milking and attending to livestock, haymaking, and fencing.
  • Have knowledge and skills to multiple operations involving basic levels of problem solving and decision making.
  • Have an appreciation of the overall processes involved in a dairy farm.
  • You understand the importance of personal hygiene, attention to detail and following procedures
  • AQF certificate II or III (or equivalent), or two years of recent and relevant work experience in lieu of the formal qualification. Note: a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
  • You must pass a drug & alcohol test and be willing to undergo a pre-employment medical if required
  • You have already had a Q Fever vaccination or are willing to participate in the vaccination process

Duties

  • Operate milking plant and equipment in a safe manner, undertake multiple functions including reading and recording instrument information e.g., milk vat temperatures and cow numbers and matching cow ID to calves to produce a quality milk outcome
  • work co-operatively as part of a team
  • Contribute to and implement Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements
  • Operate farm and dairy shed-related vehicles, plant and equipment
  • Identify and report equipment not operating normally, perform maintenance of plant and machinery
  • Operate computer equipment and software packages requiring set-up and basic function operation
  • undertake multiple functions, produce a quality outcome e.g. farm machinery
  • maintain machinery, undertake adjustments and size changes
  • solve problems and make decisions within given guidelines
  • know general scientific terminology and assist with processes such as machine repair, artificial insemination, fertiliser mix design etc.
  • operate standard measuring equipment
  • operate computerised systems using menu options
  • contribute to the team in a specific role, providing input and assisting other team members, and
  • work at times without supervision.
  • Must hold current Artificial Insemination certificate and assist in controlled breeding programs
  • Maintain current Calf feeding protocol, including tubing colostrum, and minimization of calf diseases
  • Assisting with and/or performing irrigation duties
  • Inspect livestock to gauge the effectiveness of feed programs
  • Transport, handle and store chemicals; prepare and apply chemicals
  • Where appropriately qualified, perform maintenance works on sheds, fixtures and fittings, fences and surrounds and install new or replacement equipment or fittings
  • Transport stock, feed and equipment, if appropriately licensed
  • Maintain records to ensure accurate information for stock and inventory control
  • Ensure food safety regulatory requirements are met
  • Coordinate the response to emergencies for both occupational health and safety emergencies and animal welfare emergencies
  • Participate in enterprise/industry training sessions and workshops as required

What We Offer

Full time permanent employment, 72 hours per fortnight.

Leave entitlements as per the National Employment Standard (NES).
