The ETH Library is the Swiss center for technical and scientific information. Its ETH Zurich University Archives, part of the Collections and Archives Section, is hiring a Junior Data Scientist / ML Specialist, ideally starting on 1 February 2025, fixed term until 31 December 2025. In an exploratory and innovative project, the successful candidate will develop and test solutions for the automated indexing and organization of archival documents.

Job Description

In this role, you will perform key tasks in a project that the ETH Zurich University Archives is conducting in collaboration with the Library’s Digital Scholarship Services unit and other partners. The main goal of the project is to explore the automated classification of large numbers of archival documents in order to improve accessibility with greater efficiency. Key tasks include the selection, fine-tuning, and testing of Large Language Models for different datasets with a wide range of temporal and content-related variation, as well as the development of a concept and implementation of a functional prototype. You will be closely collaborating with your colleagues in the Archives and other units, including the Library’s IT-Services. You will also present project progress and results to various stakeholders as needed.

We offer a flexible position with the opportunity to shape the further development of the ETH Library’s way of managing important cultural heritage data by building new services and tools. You will actively contribute to the development and practical implementation of innovative approaches. You can expect a collaborative and team-oriented environment at ETH Library.

Profile

You hold a Master’s degree, preferably in computer science, data science or digital humanities. You have experience in NLP, dealing with a wide range of ML models, their implementation and structured evaluation. You have a good command of German (written and spoken). Furthermore, you work independently and in a structured manner and are reliable.
