JOB Title : Senior Legal Counsel, Business Affairs & Compliance

DEPARTMENT: Legal

REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President, Legal – Business Affairs & Compliance, Sagicor Life Inc with dotted line reporting to the Senior Assistant Vice President, Compliance, Sagicor Life Inc.

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: St. Lucia

JOB SUMMARY: Provides legal and compliance services to Sagicor Life Inc and its reporting subsidiaries in the Southern Caribbean business region (“Sagicor”) and serves as Alternate Compliance Officer for Sagicor Life (Eastern Caribbean) Inc. in St. Lucia.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides legal support for day-to-day operations and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements with primary focus on the Eastern Caribbean business segment, including support for insurance, pensions, collective investment and brokerage business and real estate transactions.
  • Drafts, reviews, negotiates and settles contracts and other legal documents.
  • Prepares correspondence, opinions and legal briefs and communicates with internal customers, attorneys and regulators on legal and regulatory matters .
  • Provides support for on-site and desk-based regulatory examinations and internal and external audits in the Eastern Caribbean .
  • Reviews, analyses and advises on proposed, new and amended legislation pertaining to the legal and regulatory environment in which Sagicor operates and assists in identifying and managing legal and compliance risks.
  • Assists with the preparation and delivery of compliance education to internal stakeholders.
  • Undertakes and manages the representation of Sagicor in judicial, administrative or regulatory proceedings and works with and monitors the work of external counsel, as required.
  • Provides legal support for policy formulation and assists with departmental and strategic projects as directed.
  • Serves as Alternate Compliance Officer in Saint Lucia.
  • Provides ongoing support for anti-money laundering, counter terrorism financing, counter proliferation financing and tax information exchange compliance and acts as Compliance Officer in Eastern Caribbean jurisdictions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Education/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, Legal Education Certificate and ACAMS or an equivalent compliance designation.
  • Admitted to practise as an attorney-at-law in St. Lucia or another Eastern Caribbean jurisdiction with a minimum of 10 years’ experience.
  • Experience and competence in corporate and commercial law, with a comprehensive and current knowledge of insurance, property and securities law and practice.
  • Sound working knowledge of regional and international laws governing anti-money laundering, counter terrorism financing, counter proliferation financing and tax information exchange laws and regulations in the context of insurance and other financial services.
  • S trong organizational and legal research skills with the ability to devise workflow, prioritize competing demands and complete assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and well-developed interpersonal awareness.
  • Able to work independently with minimal direction and exercise appropriate judgment and discretion.
  • R esponsive, a nalytical, resourceful and able to keep a breast of relevant legal and regulatory developments.
  • Good computer skills and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe Professional.
  • Previous experience in the financial services industry and/or financial services regulation would be an asset.
