The Position:

The Data Technician will support the efficient usage of the College’s data to enable the College’s day to day operations and reporting needs. The Data Technician works across the College’s departments to educate and train employees on appropriate practices to ensure data is captured and managed in accordance with the College’s data management practices, while also working independently at times to maintain the quality of data within the school’s information systems. The Data Technician receives day to day supervision and guidance from the Database Administrator Analyst, and is part of the team managed by the Manager, Technical Operations.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Ensures data is clean, correct and usable, escalating issues where necessary for resolution.
  • Develops and maintains data integrity processes and procedures using automation and existing Havergal tools where possible.
  • Provides Level 1 support for issues related to the College’s Student Information System.
  • Supports the Database Administrator Analyst in the system administration of the College’s Student Information System, configuring relevant system components based on requirements.
  • Supports the use of the College’s data to other internal and external systems (e.g. Individual Education Plans (IEPs), OUAC, ONSIS, OSSLT, etc.) through extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes.
  • Educates and trains the College’s departments on appropriate practices to ensure data is captured and managed in accordance with the College’s data management practices.

Special Projects, Professional Development, And Other Duties

  • Takes independent initiative to evaluate new technologies.
  • Through training sessions, online or printed materials, or hands-on experimentation keeps well informed and current on current technologies and practices.
  • Other related duties as required.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

  • Computer related degree or diploma or equivalent job experience.
  • 1-2 years’ experience data analysis/manipulation skills in large systems environments using tools such as spreadsheets, pivot tables, xlookup and other database and data visualization tools.
  • Experience conducting data analysis and probing for information to extrapolate requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills; the ability to work well as a team member in a multi-professional environment; attention to detail; and the ability to work with minimal supervision and to act on one’s own initiative.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to meet strict deadlines; the ability to work effectively with a wide range of faculty, staff, and students; the ability to deal with a high volume of client and vendor demands.
