ScionHealth is recruiting for a Director of Liability Claims to join our Legal team! Remote candidates will be considered for this role.
Job Summary
The Director of Liability Claims directs the investigation, management, and proper resolution of liability claims and professional and general liability litigation to reduce the risk of financial loss for the Company. The Director acts as a consultant on legal issues for other department members.
Essential Functions
- Analyzes and summarizes claims information and makes recommendations to management and Liability Claims Committee regarding defense and claim resolution strategy.
- Provides counsel on liability claims issues to field employees regarding investigation, reporting and general handling of liability claims issues.
- Develops defense strategies on particular cases with outside counsel, as necessary.
- Negotiates claims and litigation settlements with plaintiffs or plaintiff attorneys.
- Updates and occasionally negotiates with outside insurers on liability claims issues and potential exposure.
- Attends mediations, arbitrations, mock trials, and jury trials to ensure that cases are resolved in the best possible manner.
- Assists with other Support Center departments and management on liability claims issues affecting them.
- Attends Liability Claims seminars and industry meetings concerning healthcare litigation trends and issues.
- Work with Risk Management and Clinical Operations to identify and address liability trends and building exposures with Risk Management and Clinical Operations to identify and address liability trends and building exposures.
Qualifications
Education
- Juris Doctor degree
- In lieu of a juris doctorate, 5 years of increasing experience in a professional liability claim setting with responsibilities matching the Essential Functions of this role will be considered.
Experience
- Three (3) years of experience with medical malpractice claim management, negotiations, general insurance, or civil litigation.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge sufficient to counsel in medical malpractice/claims management.
- Negotiation skills.
- Litigation skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, Adobe.
- Legal research skills.
- Decision-making skills.
- Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Approximate percentage of time required to travel: 10%
