Job Description

Isidore Newman School seeks an experienced educational leader and student advocate to serve as its Assistant Head of Middle School for the 2025 – 2026 school year. Faculty and staff at Newman believe in the importance of strong relationships between and high expectations for ourselves and our students. We develop high trust and healthy boundaries with our students and colleagues, and we push them and each other to achieve academically and grow personally. We believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in purposeful and appropriately challenging lessons structured by educators who are experts in their content area and who their students know care about them. As teachers support students in their growth and development both inside and outside the classroom, administrators support faculty and staff in this work and in their own growth and development as professional educators.

Purpose And Responsibilities

The Assistant Head of Middle School will work with and support the Head of Middle School in all aspects of divisional leadership and management. The position’s responsibilities include:

  • Establishing strong relationships with all members of the Middle School community.
  • Setting and maintaining high expectations for teaching and learning.
  • Promoting and modeling the School’s Mission statement and the four core values of honesty, kindness, respect, and responsibility.
  • Works with the Head of Middle School on student discipline and follow-through, monitoring performance, and behavior.
  • Working with the division head and department chairs to advance the School’s academic and social emotional learning program.
  • Supporting teachers in their day-to-day academic work through coaching and feedback.
  • Supporting class deans and advisors in their work with students and advisees.
  • Coordinating support for students in need with counselors, learning specialists, advisors, teachers, etc.
  • Managing the daily operations and planning the special events that occur in the Middle School.
  • Overseeing aspects of student life including but not limited to Enrichment programming, divisional assemblies, and clubs.
  • In coordination with the Middle School Head, meeting with parents to discuss and address their concerns.
  • Openness to teaching a Middle School course.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have ample teaching and leadership experience, preferably at the middle school level. They will have both the desire and skill set to form meaningful relationships with students and teachers while maintaining high expectations for teaching and learning. Excellent communication skills, high emotional intelligence, resourcefulness, and creativity are prerequisites for the position as well.
