Permanent, Full time, 37.5 hours per week (Mon-Thurs 7am – 3:30pm/Fri 7am – 1pm)

Serco have a fantastic opportunity for a General Hand to join the Marine Technical Services team in Plymouth.

As the General Hand, your key purpose will be to support all aspects of Serco’s Devonport Base Maintenance Team, including refits at Morice Yard, you will also assist in other tasks such as tank cleaning operations if need be. This is a shore-based position as part of the established technical repair and maintenance team which includes an additional 10 hours outside of the core week as requested by Base Manager, Vessel Superintendents or Technical Manager.

We are looking for a driven, self-motivated individual who will be able to deliver best practice and be an essential team player.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Form part of the base paint team, responsible for the prepping and painting of Serco’s vessels and barges. Mainly whilst in refit at Morice Yard.
  • To assist other members of the shore side maintenance team with their activities as may be required.
  • To assist Operations with tank cleaning operations as required.
  • To carry out all duties assigned to him in a safe manner, observing all statutory regulations and the local regulations which may be in force.
  • To have the knowledge of a permit to work system, its requirements and how to submit.
  • Interpret work instructions and perform work on time, to cost and quality standard.
  • Assist with slipping and un-slipping of vessels and barges.

  • A good understanding of Risk Assessments & Permits to Work.
  • Experience of working on vessels and familiar with their layouts.
  • A good understanding of tank entry procedures and the risks involved.

There will be a requirement to assist other members of the base staff, so a basic understanding of electrics and mechanics would be advantageous.
