About The Team
The Laboratory and Facilities Team plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations of our research and clinical trial activities. Committed to maintaining a safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory environment, the team ensures seamless management of equipment, inventory, and safety protocols. With a focus on collaboration and precision, they provide essential support to researchers, troubleshoot technical issues, and uphold high standards of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Their dedication ensures that our laboratories operate smoothly, enabling groundbreaking research and innovation.
The role
We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Laboratory Assistant to provide vital support to our laboratory and clinical trials teams. This role is key in ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, maintaining a safe and compliant work environment, and contributing to the success of our cutting-edge research.
Duties Include But Are Not Limited To
- Receive/store deliveries, manage stock, and coordinate domestic/international shipments
- Monitor and maintain lab instruments, cold storage units, and liquid nitrogen systems
- Monitor and address OH&S compliance issues, escalating unresolved concerns
- Assist lab groups with inventory of reagents, chemicals, and cold storage items
- Manage proper disposal of hazardous, biological, and general lab waste
- Conduct regular safety checks (PPE usage, chemical handling) and lab inspections, including OGTR PC2 compliance
- Develop, update, and document SOPs and safety procedures
- Assist in lab inductions for new staff and students
- Participate in lab meetings and inspections
- Promote a culture of safety, compliance, and teamwork.
Your Skills And Experience
- A tertiary qualification in science or related discipline
- High level interpersonal skills, including the ability to form productive professional relationships and communicate effectively with various stakeholders
- Strong knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, including hazardous material handling, disposal, and safety audits.
- Strong organisational, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Skilled in documenting processes clearly and accurately to support team operations
- Ability to prioritise workloads, meet timelines and work under pressure to ensure efficient and effective delivery of services
- A solutions-oriented approach with a commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment.

The Centre for Eye Research Australia is a not-for-profit and an international leader in eye research with real world impact. We are an independent Medical Research Institute closely affiliated with the University of Melbourne within the discipline of ophthalmology in the Department of Surgery, Melbourne Medical School. Our staff and students are located at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and 200 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne.
