Job description
Overview
As a Crossing Guard, your primary responsibility is to facilitate the secure passage of pedestrians, including children, by monitoring vehicular traffic and signaling when it is safe to cross roads at specified locations. This role is essential for maintaining the safety of pedestrians at designated crosswalks by asserting right-of-way and halting vehicular flow.
Positions are available at various spots including Activa/Berry Moss, Activa/Bridlewreath, Eagen/Queens Blv, Greenbrook/Westmount, and Kinzie/River.
Responsibilities
- Assist pedestrians, notably schoolchildren, in crossing streets safely by stopping traffic at marked crossings.
- Observe traffic gaps and escort children across roadways while displaying a visible "stop" sign to oncoming vehicles.
- Educate children on safe crossing practices and pedestrian behaviors.
- Report any concerns or incidents promptly to the supervisor.
- Carry out additional related duties as directed.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum educational attainment equivalent to partial secondary school.
- Up to one month of relevant experience, such as customer service or volunteering involving interaction with others.
Additional Conditions
- Work hours are Monday through Friday, with approximately one-hour shifts in the morning between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM and one-hour shifts in the afternoon between 2:45 PM and 4:00 PM; timings are subject to change.
- Access to dependable transportation for commuting to assigned locations within the City of Kitchener.
- Candidates must be willing to undergo a medical examination to confirm fitness for duty as a prerequisite for employment.
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, obtained at the applicant’s expense, is mandatory for employment.
