Position Summary

As a Backend Engineer specialized in PHP, you will play a central role in advancing a platform serving more than 30 million users globally. Your expertise will help balance rapid innovation and system stability while developing high-quality backend services designed for scalability and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services to handle large volumes of global traffic effectively.
• Develop functional APIs and optimize database queries to ensure smooth and responsive user experiences.
• Enhance modular architecture by contributing to service-oriented systems that are resilient and maintainable.
• Produce clean, maintainable code adhering to SOLID principles, object-oriented programming best practices, and design patterns.
• Expertly troubleshoot and debug complex issues within the technology stack.
• Integrate asynchronous processes utilizing queues and event-driven programming techniques to increase system efficiency.
• Collaborate closely with senior engineers and product teams to translate requirements into high-quality technical solutions.

Required Qualifications

• 3 to 5 years of professional backend development experience with strong proficiency in PHP.
• Experience in Laravel or solid background in Symfony framework with eagerness to transition into Laravel.
• Deep understanding of object-oriented programming, interfaces, and modular code structure emphasizing code cleanliness.
• Strong knowledge of SQL, including database indexing, schema migrations, and query performance tuning.
• Proficiency in leveraging AI tools to enhance technical tasks by prompt crafting, validation, and iterative improvements.
• Familiarity with modern infrastructure technologies such as Docker and basic knowledge of CI/CD pipeline debugging.
• Experience writing unit and feature tests for ensuring software reliability.
• Fluent in English with excellent communication skills suitable for remote collaboration.

• Knowledge of caching solutions like Redis or Memcached and cloud platforms such as AWS.
• Experience in SaaS or travel technology domains.

Location and Employment Details

• Remote work opportunity within Spain or the United Kingdom.
• Full-time permanent contract: "contrato indefinido" via Deel for Spain or standard permanent employment for the UK.
• English is the primary working language both in meetings and asynchronous communication.

Compensation

The salary range for this role varies by location within Europe with the United Kingdom offering between £74,800 and £107,500 annually. Specific offers are adjusted based on candidate location to ensure equitable compensation.

On-Call Responsibilities

• Participation in on-call rotation to maintain 24/7 service reliability is mandatory.
• Compensation includes standby fees and overtime pay.
• No on-call duties during the initial six months of employment.
• Guaranteed rest and flexible scheduling following night incidents to minimize fatigue.
• Rotation schedules split between weekdays and weekends to distribute workload fairly.
