About Balor Games

Balor Games is an independent “Triple I” game publisher focused on preserving and supporting standout creative work over the long term. Founded by former Humble Games leaders, the company manages a broad portfolio of acclaimed indie titles, including catalogs acquired from Humble Games and Firestoke.

The company positions itself as a curator for independent games and backs developers with expertise, resources, and conviction-led support.

Role Overview

This role serves as the top accounting leader for the business, owning the accuracy of financial records, the cadence of the close process, and the controls that keep the company operating with confidence. You will partner closely with the CEO and an external fractional CFO to provide leadership and investors with reliable, decision-ready reporting.

The position is very hands-on. You will be active in QuickBooks, take ownership of month-end close, and work closely with FP&A. Over the first 6 to 12 months, you are expected to bring in a direct report, such as a Senior Accountant or Staff Accountant, and then continue building the accounting function as the company expands.

Reporting Line, Location, and Travel

The role reports to the CEO / Founder and has a dotted-line relationship with the fractional CFO. It is fully remote, but applicants must live in Colorado, North Carolina, or Texas. Travel is limited and may include occasional visits for team off-sites and events.

Key Responsibilities

You will oversee accounting operations, monthly and annual close, internal controls, compliance, strategic finance support, and future team development.

  • Manage the full general ledger and own month-end and year-end close in QuickBooks Online, including journal entries, accruals, prepaid items, deferrals, and intercompany transactions.
  • Complete a timely and accurate close target of 7 to 10 business days and prepare a clean reporting package for leadership and investors.
  • Handle accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, expense controls, corporate card programs, and bank reconciliations.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and apply GAAP-compliant treatment for revenue recognition under ASC 606, royalties and rev-share arrangements with studios, capitalized software and game development costs, and stock-based compensation.
  • Track recoupment across a large game catalog, produce accurate royalty statements for development partners, and ensure transparent reporting on advances, revenue-share arrangements, and deal-level P&L.
  • Build and maintain internal controls suited to the company’s current stage, while keeping audit readiness and future scalability in mind.
  • Lead the annual audit or review process and act as the main contact for external auditors.
  • Oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance with outside tax advisors, including sales and use tax, multi-state nexus, and 1099 filings.
  • Manage entity formation and ongoing compliance, including state registrations as operations grow.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with the fractional CFO and CEO on investor communications, cap table support, and the next fundraising round.
  • Support M&A work, including financial due diligence for possible studio acquisitions or publishing transactions, quality of earnings preparation, and integration after closing.
  • Review and help model key publishing deal terms such as advances, recoupment, revenue share, and minimum guarantees from an accounting and reporting perspective.
  • Within the first 6 to 12 months, define the role and hire your first direct report.
  • Help build the accounting organization over time and assess when the business needs systems beyond QuickBooks, such as NetSuite or a comparable ERP.

Qualifications

  • CPA certification is mandatory, with an active license in good standing.
  • You should bring at least 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including both public accounting and in-house work at a fast-growing company.
  • Experience at Series A or Series B stage is important; you have acted as a senior accounting leader or major contributor in a startup environment where investor and board expectations are high.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with QuickBooks Online is required, including an understanding of its limitations and when a larger ERP makes sense.
  • You must have M&A exposure through at least one transaction, such as buy-side or sell-side work, due diligence, QoE, working capital true-ups, or post-close integration.
  • Deep technical accounting knowledge is needed, including US GAAP, ASC 606, capitalized software costs, and stock-based compensation.
  • You should be a builder who is comfortable doing the work today and eventually hiring, coaching, and leading a team.
  • Strong communication skills are essential so you can explain accounting clearly to a CEO, board members, and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Candidates must live in Colorado, North Carolina, or Texas and be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Background

  • Experience in gaming, interactive entertainment, or digital media, whether at a publisher, studio, or platform.
  • Familiarity with gaming revenue models such as in-app purchases, subscriptions, premium downloads, platform rev-share, and royalty/rev-share arrangements with studios.
  • Exposure to ERP implementation or migration, including systems such as NetSuite or Sage Intacct.
  • Background in multi-entity accounting or international accounting.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range is $130,000 to $180,000, depending on experience and location. The package also includes meaningful equity aligned with the seniority of the role, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, generous PTO, and a remote-first work culture. The role also offers the opportunity to grow into a leadership position over a scaling accounting and finance team.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Balor Games is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. Hiring decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status.
