Position Overview
This full-time role is based onsite in Gadsden, Alabama. The Student Maintenance Helper is responsible for comprehensive upkeep of the Center grounds, buildings, and related facilities, ensuring compliance with government and corporate policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Spread sand on Center roads and walkways and remove ice from hazardous locations.
- Maintain lawns through fertilization, mowing, watering, herbicide application, and planting new grass areas.
- Care for trees by pruning, watering, fertilizing, transplanting, and removing dangerous or dead trees.
- Attend to shrubs with fertilizing, pruning, mulching, and watering.
- Collect and remove litter and debris from grounds, streets, and parking lots; sweep and clean exterior entrances, steps, sidewalks, and landings.
- Use appropriate equipment and materials to maintain property.
- Perform custodial tasks including floor care, restroom and work area sanitation, vacuuming, washing walls, windows, woodwork, and dusting furniture and fixtures.
- Keep grounds and dumpster areas clean and free from trash and litter.
- Assist maintenance team with various building upkeep duties.
- Support and enforce zero tolerance policies at the Center.
- Participate actively in student employability programs and activities.
- Maintain a harassment-free, safe, and respectful environment for staff and students.
- Encourage student success by modeling positive behaviors, mentoring, monitoring skill development, and addressing inappropriate conduct.
- Promote excellent customer service.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Requirements
- Authorization to participate in Academic and Career Technical Training programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in groundskeeping or related maintenance work.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in office settings and various locations throughout the Center.
- Physical activity includes frequent walking, stair climbing, and environment observation.
- Ability to rapidly respond to emergencies or physical incidents for the safety of students and staff.
- Capability to operate passenger vehicles safely while supervising students.
Physical Demands
- Job tasks require sitting, standing, walking, talking, and hearing frequently.
- Occasional hand usage for handling tools and controls, reaching with arms, and close interaction with coworkers and shared spaces.
- Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision needs including close vision and focus adjustment.
