About the Team
This team partners with the Massmart Product team to identify business challenges and build scalable technological solutions. Massmart operates in South Africa with multiple retail banners like Makro, Game, and Builders, managing around 300 stores nationwide.
Role Overview
As a Software Engineer III, you will focus on enhancing the Point of Sales system used in Makro. This legacy system requires modernization to incorporate the latest technologies while ensuring high scalability and availability, as it is a critical Tier 0 retail application.
Key Responsibilities and Skills
- Develop backend platform components primarily in Java technologies.
- Design and implement distributed systems and large-scale applications.
- Apply expertise in Kafka and Cassandra for building data streaming and storage solutions.
- Leverage containerization and Microservices architectures to modernize the system.
- Implement CI/CD pipelines to streamline deployment processes.
- Utilize Java proficiency including multithreading, data structures, algorithms, and design patterns to deliver high-performance, scalable applications.
- Act as a hands-on technical leader and mentor to other skilled engineers.
Qualifications Required
- Experience between 5 to 8 years overall, with at least 5 years dedicated to backend platform development.
- Strong background in Java-based technologies, distributed systems, and complex application design.
- Practical knowledge of Kafka, Cassandra, container technologies, and microservices.
- Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous delivery practices.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related fields with at least 2 years of software engineering experience; or 4 years relevant experience if degree is not possessed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Cybersecurity or related disciplines.
- Experience with digital accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA compliance and assistive technology integration.
