Job description
Role Overview
We are looking for a Lead Backend Software Engineer to join a leading organisation's core digital team. This pivotal hands-on leadership role involves overseeing the technical vision and delivery of a scalable platform that supports thousands of players, retailers, and tournament organisers globally. Working closely with the Technical Lead, you will design distributed systems that scale sustainably to meet the demands of a passionate international user base.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead architecture efforts for complex, scalable, secure, highly available distributed systems.
- Take ownership of delivery outcomes focusing on reliability, scalability, and performance while making key technology stack decisions.
- Mentor and boost engineering quality by coaching team members and promoting a culture of responsibility and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with Product and Design teams to translate strategic vision into scalable solutions using prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs).
- Enhance operational excellence by driving improvements in continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), DevOps practices, and production observability.
Required Skills and Experience
- Substantial professional experience developing modern backend systems and APIs in a senior or lead role.
- Expertise in Python and Django preferred, or equivalent programming languages.
- Strong proficiency in designing and implementing scalable REST and GraphQL APIs.
- Practical experience with AWS cloud services, Docker containerization, and infrastructure management using Terraform or AWS CDK.
- Advanced knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and designing distributed systems architectures.
- Excellent communication skills to convey complex technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
