Job description
Position Overview
The Department Manager is accountable for managing daily activities within a specific department of a large-format retail store containing multiple sections. This role ensures seamless operational flow, promotes sales growth, and meets key performance indicators (KPIs) aligned with the wider store goals. Additionally, the manager mentors staff, enhances customer satisfaction, and drives continuous improvement through careful monitoring.
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise the assigned department’s overall performance, maintaining high operational standards in line with company policies regarding stock control, sales, and customer service.
- Ensure the department consistently hits critical KPIs including sales targets, conversion ratios, customer satisfaction, and minimization of stock losses.
- Coordinate with other department leaders and the Store Manager to align objectives across the store.
- Monitor and analyze KPIs such as sales figures, inventory levels, and employee productivity, preparing regular reports for the Store Manager highlighting achievements and improvement areas.
- Implement corrective measures and process adjustments based on KPI insights to enhance departmental outcomes.
- Maintain top-tier visual merchandising standards to craft an appealing shopping environment, partnering with the visual merchandising team to update displays seasonally and for promotions.
- Oversee customer engagement within the department, guaranteeing exceptional service, addressing customer needs, and promoting loyalty incentives.
- Manage inventory by maintaining optimal stock levels, reducing losses, and coordinating timely replenishment and rotation with the store’s replenishment team.
- Handle operational duties such as staff rostering, scheduling, and resolving customer questions or complaints specific to the department.
- Promote security awareness, taking preventive steps to reduce theft and damage, and ensure all safety protocols are followed to protect staff and customers.
- Lead and nurture the departmental team through regular coaching and training focused on service quality, product knowledge, and operational skills, cultivating a positive, productive team culture.
Candidate Profile
Ideal applicants will have between three to four years of retail experience, preferably within large-format or big-box stores. Essential qualities include strong leadership skills, a track record of managing KPIs successfully, and the ability to mentor and grow a team. Expertise in inventory control and visual merchandising is also preferred.
