Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

Propellerhead is seeking an accomplished Senior Software Engineer to join its core engineering team in Auckland, reporting directly to the CTO. This role involves pioneering research and establishing future technical directions for Propellerhead and its clientele. The engineering group delivers essential tools, techniques, and libraries that support service development teams.

You will lead the progression of projects from proof of concept through production while mentoring colleagues on cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. A strong focus will be on aiding teams and clients in developing secure, enterprise-grade software and deployment architectures leveraging AI capabilities.

This position involves collaboration with a team of skilled software professionals operating with considerable autonomy. The work environment adheres to a hybrid model requiring regular on-site attendance in Auckland. Applications are welcome from candidates within New Zealand and internationally who intend to relocate.

Primary Responsibilities

• Research and define technical solutions aligned with the CTO's vision through collaborative team investigations.
• Engage in full-stack software design and implementation, encompassing code structure, deployment architecture, DevOps strategies, automated testing, and integration with third-party systems—primarily utilizing large language models (LLMs) over traditional hand coding.
• Work with client stakeholders and internal teams to ensure consensus on solution design and delivery roadmaps consistent with budget constraints.
• Lead the migration of existing diverse language solutions to standardized Rust and TypeScript platforms, fostering portability and standardization in deployment infrastructures.
• Share technical expertise across the organization to embed strategic technical practices.

Required Skills and Experience

• Over 7 years of professional experience in software development or engineering with enterprise-level software complexity.
• Expertise in at least one enterprise-grade programming language such as C# with .NET or Java with Spring framework.
• Experience with low-level programming languages for system or application development, preferably Rust, or alternatively C++.
• Proficiency in TypeScript along with React or comparable front-end frameworks and a strong grasp of web application development.
• Practical experience deploying applications on cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure or AWS, including the creation of CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform.
• Proven ability in designing software with distributed and asynchronous architectures, including significant contributions to microservices and message-driven system projects.
• Familiarity with leveraging LLMs to accelerate delivery and improve system security, coupled with the capacity to produce clear design documentation.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to effectively translate business needs into technical implementations.
