About the Role
As a Senior Search Engineer at Xero, you will be integral to managing and advancing one of the largest search infrastructures in the Southern Hemisphere. This role involves handling a massive search cluster responsible for organizing hundreds of millions of documents with a 99.9% uptime guarantee, while playing a key role in a major platform reconstruction that supports the company's future growth.
Responsibilities and Impact
- Take ownership and drive engineering initiatives across search-specific and broad engineering tasks.
- Maintain and scale the global search cluster for high availability and performance.
- Contribute to raising and reviewing code changes and lead project efforts within the team.
Team Interaction and Collaboration
Work closely with a compact team located across Melbourne, New South Wales, and New Zealand. Collaborate daily with platform ingestion teams, a dedicated product manager, and the Catalyst Platform group that manages service releases.
Current Projects
- Rebuilding a large-scale search platform as a core part of Xero’s infrastructure.
- Operating and evolving the cluster to maintain 99.9% uptime.
- Partnering with the ODL team on ingestion pipeline development.
- Exploring future advancements in data and AI-related search capabilities.
Work Location and Culture
This position is based in Australia or New Zealand with flexible work options including remote days and office collaboration opportunities. Team meetups occur approximately semi-annually in Melbourne for alignment and bonding.
Preferred Qualifications and Attributes
- Extensive experience in search engineering with practical knowledge of building, maintaining, and scaling production search systems.
- Strong foundation in software engineering, capable of contributing beyond search-specific tasks.
- Commitment to code quality and best practices for development and code review.
- Effective collaboration skills across distributed teams, including engineering, product, and infrastructure roles.
- Familiarity with data or AI tools is advantageous but not mandatory.
