Customs Agent - Montego Bay

Overview

As a Customs Agent at DHL Express in Montego Bay, you will play a crucial role in facilitating international commerce. Your responsibilities will include meticulous review and preparation of import and export documentation, classification of shipments using detailed customs codes, and handling electronic submissions to ensure smooth customs clearance. Collaborating closely with collection and delivery teams, you will guarantee compliance with DHL policies and government regulations, promoting efficient and secure transport of goods while upholding high service standards.

Primary Responsibilities

• Prepare all required customs documentation promptly and accurately to support import, export, and transshipment operations for inbound and outbound shipments.
• Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence related to customs processes.
• Maintain records using both electronic systems and physical filing methods.
• Input data in relevant platforms such as Islander and update online systems as needed.
• Liaise with customs officials at various levels, government bodies, DHL departments, and customers concerning customs-related issues.
• Stay informed on updates to customs regulations, laws, and procedures to ensure compliance.
• Continuously seek to optimize customs clearance procedures to meet or surpass DHL's service quality expectations.
• Ensure full adherence to customs and tax laws consistent with DHL’s policies and practices.
• Compile detailed, timely reports on duties, tariffs, fees, and taxes to aid in effective cost control.
• Prepare and expedite international shipping manifests to facilitate efficient customs clearance.
• Maintain thorough customs records for easy access and safekeeping.
• Monitor quality standards (SQI) and report discrepancies when necessary.
• Keep daily logs of shipments cleared by DHL, including exports.
• Track brokerage staff activities daily.
• Document delays and other clearance issues in daily logs.
• Support customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving complaints, and providing guidance on documentation requirements.
• Prevent delays internally to avoid process leakages.
• Provide origin stations with information on local charges, procedures, and documentation requirements.
• Contact consignees regarding duties, standards bureau issues, paperwork queries, and other customs matters concerning freight and express shipments.
• Resolve shipment irregularities, including handling of dangerous or suspicious cargo.
• Reproduce original shipping paperwork for customers when necessary.
• Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in computer applications and customs-related information systems.
• Familiarity with international trade laws, carriage of goods legislation, and dangerous goods regulations.
• Possession of a valid General Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
• No history of criminal convictions.
• Customs Broker's License is required.
• Minimum education level of High School or equivalent.
• At least one year of experience in customs brokerage or freight forwarding.
• Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
