Role overview

Google is looking for a Software Engineer to join the Sovereign Cloud team in Australia. The group designs, delivers, and runs secure private cloud services for critical Australian Federal Government customers. The work focuses on building a flexible, reliable, and scalable end-to-end capability for complex operating environments, while partnering closely with internal product teams to keep improving the platform.

The wider engineering organization at Google works on systems that operate at enormous scale and spans areas such as distributed systems, networking, storage, security, artificial intelligence, and user-facing product development. In this role, you would contribute to a specific project that matters to Google and have room to move across teams and initiatives as business needs evolve.

Preferred working locations

Applicants can indicate a preferred base from Canberra, ACT or Sydney, NSW.

Minimum qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent level of practical experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience programming in C++, Java, Python, or Go.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency Negative Vetting 1 (NV1) clearance.

Preferred qualifications

  • A master’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience building accessible technology solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop product or system features by writing production-quality code.
  • Review other engineers’ code and provide practical feedback on standards, correctness, testability, maintainability, and efficiency.
  • Update documentation and learning materials so they stay aligned with product or program changes and user feedback.
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve product or system issues by tracing root causes across hardware, network, and service environments.
  • Take part in, or lead, design discussions with peers and stakeholders to evaluate and choose appropriate technologies.

Security and compliance

This role requires successful candidates to hold and maintain AGSVA NV1 security clearance.
