Software Engineer, Sovereign Cloud

About the role

Google is looking for a Software Engineer to join the Sovereign Cloud team in Australia. The work focuses on building and running secure private cloud services that support highly sensitive public-sector environments. This team helps deliver flexible, dependable, and scalable cloud capabilities for critical Australian Federal Government customers, while collaborating with Google product teams to improve the platform over time.

As part of Google’s broader engineering organization, this role involves solving complex technical problems across a range of domains such as distributed systems, large-scale software, networking, security, storage, and user-facing technologies. The position is suited to someone who enjoys working on important projects, adapting to changing priorities, and contributing across the full stack.

Preferred working location

Applicants will be able to choose between Canberra, ACT or Sydney, NSW.

Minimum qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 2 years of experience programming in C++, Java, Python, or Go.
• Ability to obtain and maintain the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency Negative Vetting 1 (NV1) clearance.

Preferred qualifications

• A master’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical discipline.
• At least 2 years of experience working with data structures and algorithms.
• Background in building accessible technologies.

Responsibilities

• Develop product and system code for the team’s software and cloud services.
• Review other engineers’ code and provide practical feedback on style, accuracy, testability, efficiency, and adherence to standards.
• Update and expand documentation or learning material as products evolve and users share feedback.
• Investigate, debug, and resolve product or system issues by tracing problems across hardware, network, and service operations.
• Take part in design discussions and reviews with teammates and stakeholders to evaluate technical options.
